The oil and gas industry has done it’s worst and Calgary continues to grow, although at a slower rate.  In a recent interview Naheed Nenshi noted that the impact of the changes in oil and gas have had a smaller impact on Calgary than expected.  After years of having one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada, Calgary now has an unemployment rate that is closer to the national average.

Although many people have been impacted by layoffs in the oil and gas industry the downturn has also created opportunities.  There are real bargains to be had in entering into long term leases for commercial or retail space.  Their is a greater availability of workers at all skill levels, and wages and salaries are not being artificially pushed higher by the oil and gas industry.  This is an excellent time to take a personal inventory of your skills, background and the things you are truly passionate about.  Applying these things and starting the business you have always dreamed about opening can be a life changing experience.
